2020 Property Tax Rebate for Seniors Program

The 2020 Property Tax Rebate for Seniors Program has officially launched!

The aim of this provincial program is to financially assist senior citizens to remain in their homes as long as possible.

Supports like this are very important as the vast majority of senior citizens in Canada currently live in their home, rather than in a long-term care or related care facilities (Statistics Canada, 2011).

Jointly administered by the Department of Service Nova Scotia and Internal Services, the property tax rebate provides eligible senior citizens with an annual 50% rebate on their municipal property taxes.

The maximum annual rebate is $800 and is based on the taxes paid in the previous year.

An important and helpful change to the provincial program has taken place this year; if applicants receive their income tax refund from the Canada Revenue Agency, via direct deposit, their property tax rebate will be deposited into the bank account they have registered with the CRA. If applicants do not use direct deposit, the rebate will be mailed by cheque within 8 weeks of submitting an application.

If you received a rebate in 2019 and are still eligible, an application will be mailed directly to you. If you are eligible and you have not applied yet, you can drop by my office at 397 Bedford Highway, Suite 201 to pick one up!

Applications are also available online at different senior’s organizations, at Access Nova Scotia offices, online, or via telephone by calling 1-800-670-4357 or 902-424-5200 in Halifax beginning July 2.

Additional information about the provincial program is available online at

Other services are also available to help seniors remain in their home, including financial support for home improvements and a heating rebate program.
