Breast Density Information Available

Knowing all the information regarding breast density is a very important component of breast cancer screening, and necessary to help early treatment.

Breast density will now be automatically included in a woman’s screening mammography report.

Knowing your breast density is essential because women with a higher breast density have an increased risk of breast cancer.

Furthermore, when there is a higher breast density, it may make it more difficult for a radiologist to interpret the screening mammogram.

Nova Scotia is the first province in the country to use the software that assesses breast density and automatically shares results.

Those who have been screened in the last two years are still able to contact their primary health-care provider to ask for their breast density information.

One in eight women in this province will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
