Buy Local Launch

This afternoon, I had the pleasure of joining Keith Colwell, MLA, Minister of Agriculture, for the Buy Local launch at Sobeys Clayton Park West.

The event was hosted in partnership with Taste of Nova Scotia across the province to launch this new initiative, which makes it easier for Nova Scotians to identify and purchase local products at NSLC and grocery stores.

We had the opportunity to sample several wonderful items, including Van Dyk’s 100% Pure Wild Blueberry Juice, a delicious turnip soup and excellent coffee from Just Us! Coffee. All of the products we sampled today are produced right here in Nova Scotia.

I was most excited to speak with Vicki Matthews of Just Us, who told me about an incredible partnership between the company and the Valley African Nova Scotian Development Association (VANSDA). The Legacy Series Coffee highlights several influential members of the African community. I was gifted the AmbitioUS! Coffee, which remembers Marcus Garvey Jr., who promoted the influential Pan-African philosophy. The coffee is available for sale at multiple Sobeys locations and online.

My final stop was at the NSLC in Bayer’s Lake, where I had the pleasure of sampling products from Lake City Cider and Boxing Rock Brewing Company. Both products are made locally in Nova Scotia and are available at all NSLC locations.

I am so pleased that I was able to learn about the many local food and beverage options we have in Nova Scotia. It is such a valuable part of our economy and I am thrilled that it will be easier for consumers to purchase at their local stores. I was also able to hand out bags to many constituents at the Sobeys entrance with information about all the Nova Scotian produce and products available.
