30 Jan New Season of Public Events Celebrate Nova Scotia Heritage and Excellence

Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc and Mrs. LeBlanc invite Nova Scotians and visitors to join them for the Winter 2018 Series of Evenings at Government House. 

Three themes and anniversaries will be commemorated through this new series of public events. They are African Heritage Month, the Centenary of the end of the First World War, and the Centenary of Women attaining the right to vote in Nova Scotia.

Featured topics are the Black Loyalists, the history of Acadian schools in Nova Scotia, a piano and flute recital, a presentation on Nova Scotia’s experience of the First World War, Scottish Dancing, and a presentation on Women’s suffrage.

“Following the success of the Fall 2017 Series, Mrs. LeBlanc and I are delighted to continue hosting Evenings at Government House,” said Lt.-Gov. LeBlanc. “These events provide a wonderful opportunity for our citizens to learn about Nova Scotia’s rich history, heritage and culture in the setting of Government House, the ceremonial home of all Nova Scotians.” 

All events are held at Government House, 1451 Barrington St., Halifax. The events are free and people can register online at lt.gov.ns.ca or by calling 902-424-7001.

Scheduled events are:
— to mark African Heritage Month 2018, Vanessa Fells of the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre will present on the Black Loyalists of Nova Scotia, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 7-8:30 p.m.
— a presentation on the history of Acadian schools in Nova Scotia by Sally Ross, Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7-8:30 p.m.
— a piano and flute performance by husband and wife duo Peter Allen and Patricia Creighton, Tuesday, Mar. 13, 7-8:30 p.m.
— to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, historian and author Brian Tennyson will present on Nova Scotia’s experience of the First World War, Tuesday, Mar. 27, 7-8:30 p.m. 
— to celebrate Tartan Day in Nova Scotia, the Amethyst Scottish Dancers will perform, Tuesday, Apr. 10, 7-8:30 p.m.
— to commemorate the centenary of women attaining the right to vote in Nova Scotia, academic Heidi MacDonald will speak on Women’s Suffrage, Tuesday, Apr. 24, 7-8:30 p.m.
