Spooky, Scary, Safe: Five Halloween Safety Tips

Happy Halloween! Halloween is a fun time of year with thousands of ghouls and goblins hitting the streets across Nova Scotia.

There are a few things you can do to ensure a safer, happier … scarier Halloween! Check out these simple tips to reduce the risk of real scares tonight:

  1. Drive Safely: While the kids are trick-or-treating it is very important to drive slower and more cautiously. Halloween costumes can reduce visibility for children, so it is important to keep your eyes on the road. If you are getting in the Halloween spirit yourself, remember if you drink do not drive.
  2. Supervision: Children should be accompanied by an adult. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
  3. Scary, super, and safe: Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors, choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  4. Review the rules: Before departing for your trick or treating adventure, remind the children about safety: cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
  5. Mobile phone safety: Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
